Common Door Closer Problems
Door closers are simple in concept but have a lot of moving parts: hydraulic fluid, springs, valves, pistons, arms, mounting plates. When any part of that system fails or drifts out of adjustment, the door behaves badly — slamming, dragging, leaking, or just not closing at all. Most issues are repairable; here are the most common:
- Door slams shut — Closing speed or latching speed valve out of adjustment, or hydraulic fluid depleted from a leak
- Door doesn't close fully — Spring power too weak, mechanism worn, or door binding on the frame
- Door drags or moves slowly — Closing speed adjusted too slow, or internal mechanism contaminated / worn
- Closer leaking oil — Internal seal failure. Sometimes serviceable, often time to replace.
- Closer arm bent or broken — Door was forced open against the closer, or hit by a cart / equipment
- Mounting plate loose — Screws backed out or the door / frame is hollow and the screws stripped out
- Door too hard to open — Spring power too strong, or back-check valve over-tightened. ADA violation if over 5 lbs (interior) / 8.5 lbs (exterior).
- Door springs back open — Latch or strike issue more than closer issue, but we diagnose the whole system
- Hold-open feature failed — Closer with electromagnetic or mechanical hold-open that no longer holds or no longer releases
Repair First, Replace Only If Necessary
Quality commercial door closers (LCN, Norton, Sargent, Dorma) are designed to be field-serviced. Most "broken" closers actually just need adjustment, lubrication, or a single component swap. Replacement should be reserved for closers that are:
- Leaking oil from the body (internal seals failed)
- Bent or visibly damaged from impact
- End-of-life from heavy use over 20+ years
- Wrong grade / size for the door they're on
- Discontinued models with no available replacement parts
We diagnose honestly and recommend the cheapest correct fix.

- Handles the door's weight and width without straining
- Resists damage from over-swing or forced-open situations (back-check)
