Electronic Keypad vs. Mechanical Keypad
Two main categories of "keypad" locks:
- Mechanical pushbutton (like Simplex) — No batteries, no electronics. One combination. All users enter the same code. Cheaper, virtually maintenance-free, but limited.
- Electronic keypad — Battery-powered. Multiple user codes (often 30-2000+). Optional audit trail. Schedule-based access on advanced models. Codes added / deleted instantly.
For most business applications, we recommend electronic. Individual user codes give you basic accountability and the ability to remove access without rekeying.
Battery Management
Electronic keypad locks run on standard batteries (typically 4 to 8 AA alkalines). Battery life is usually 1-3 years depending on use frequency and model. Locks alert you with a low-battery warning weeks before failure. All quality models include a physical key override for emergency access if batteries die before you notice.
