Master Key Systems
for Homes in Auburn

One master key opens everything. Individual keys open only their assigned door. Auburn Lock & Car Keys designs and installs residential master key systems for large homes, multi-unit properties, rental homes, vacation rentals, and any setup where keyed access needs structure.

What Is a Master Key System?

In a master key system, each lock has two valid keys: an individual "change key" that opens only that lock, and a master key that opens that lock plus others in the system. You can extend this further with grand master keys and sub-master keys for more complex arrangements.

This isn't just for offices and apartment buildings. Master key systems make sense for plenty of residential applications:

Residential Master Key Use Cases

  • Large single-family home — front door, back door, side door, garage entry, basement, shed, gates. Family members each carry one key (the master) that opens everything; specific keys exist for shed/garage/gate that don't open the house.
  • Multi-generational household — parents have a master that opens the in-law suite + the main house. The in-law suite occupants have a key that only opens their side.
  • Vacation rental / Airbnb — you (the owner) have a master that opens everything. Guests get a key that opens only the rental unit, not the owner's closet, storage, or garage.
  • Rental homes / duplex / fourplex — each tenant gets a key to only their unit. The property owner / manager has a master that opens every unit (in some jurisdictions) plus common areas.
  • House cleaner / dog walker access — a key that opens the front door for a service provider, but doesn't open the office, garage, or upstairs.
  • Older parent independence — an aging parent has their own key. Adult children have a master that can open it in emergencies plus their own homes.

How We Design a System

Master key systems require planning. We start by asking who needs to access what, when, and at what level of authorization. Then we design a key bitting structure that gives you the access tiers you need while keeping the system secure (a system with too many keys becomes a security liability).

For best results, we recommend restricted keyways (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Schlage Primus) for master key systems so duplicates can't be made at hardware stores. This is essential for vacation rentals and any setup where multiple people will have keys.

Our Process

How Master Key Systems for Homes Works

Master key system design is a consultative process — we get it right the first time.

01

Needs Consultation

We meet with you, walk the property, and map out who needs access to what. This is the most important step.

02

System Design

We design a key hierarchy: master, sub-master (if needed), and individual change keys. You approve before any locks are touched.

03

Lock Rekey or Install

We rekey your existing locks (if compatible) or install new locks designed for master keying. Restricted keyways are strongly recommended.

04

Key Issuance & Records

You receive your keys plus a documented record of which key opens what. We can keep your bitting on file for future copies.

FAQ

Master Key Systems for Homes Questions

Keyed-alike means every lock takes the same single key. Simple, no hierarchy. Master key means each lock has its own individual key AND a master key that opens it too. Master keying is needed when you want different people to have different access levels. Keyed-alike is fine when everyone with a key should access everything.
It depends on scope. A simple 3-4 door master system using your existing compatible locks runs $200 to $400. A larger system with new restricted-keyway locks for a vacation rental or multi-unit property is $600 to $1,500+. The system pays for itself if you rent the property because you stop rekeying between tenants.
Sometimes, yes — if the locks are quality residential-grade (Schlage, Kwikset SmartKey, Yale, etc.) and the cylinders accept master pins. Many builder-grade locks technically can be master-keyed but aren't great candidates because the keyways aren't restricted, meaning copies can be made anywhere. For master keying, we usually recommend upgrading the cylinders at the same time.
Strongly recommended. Without restricted keys, every key in your system can be duplicated at any hardware store kiosk — including the master. For vacation rentals especially, restricted keyways are essential to maintain real key control. For small family-only systems where you trust everyone with a key, standard keyways may be acceptable.
We provide a documented "key control" record listing every key by code and what it opens. Most clients also choose to laser-engrave each key with a unique identifier ("M" for master, "1" for front, etc.). For larger systems, we can keep your bitting on file so future copies are easy to authorize.
Most smart locks support multiple PIN codes natively — in some ways the digital equivalent of master keying, with even more flexibility. For mixed setups (some smart locks, some traditional), we can design a hybrid system. Tell us your goals and we'll suggest the right approach.
